Bookwhore Presents: Fangirl

Fangirl Book 2

Fangirl. The book I opened last Dec 2014 and finished by August 2015. Here goes my rating and review.

Ratings at goodreads.com: 4.19* and below is the back blurb:

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan…

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words… And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

My take on the book:

I honestly can’t figure out if I love or hate this book.

‘Eleanor and Park’ touched my heart in many ways. Hence, I picked out this book thinking that Rainbow Rowell might have another gem to share to her readers; don’t get me wrong, ‘Fangirl’ is indeed a gem. What i’ve always loved about Rainbow Rowell’s novels is that she will take you to a world where you would actually believe that all her characters  are real people and Fangirl is no exemption. The protagonist Cath is so real that you can feel all her emotions. Her insecurities over Wren (her twin sister), anger towards her mother who left them when she and her sister were only about 8 years old, her unconditonal love for her bi-polar father, her amazement and open jealousy towards Reagan and  how she fell in love and lust with Levi (Oh my, Levi? he’s so..I have no words..good god how I wished he was real, Cath is so damn lucky).

The only, you may say, complain I have with this book is the ‘fanfiction’ and ‘fangirl-ing’ part, maybe because I can’t quite relate to it? I actually skipped some excerpt from Simon Snow’s (aka Harry Potter loves Draco Malfoy with a touch of Twilight) story on some pages just because I’m excited to read more about what is going to happen to Cath’s life in the next chapter. I know I might have missed some juicy details on the gay love/hate relationship of a wizard/vampire but nah..it did not really caught my attention. FYI, I read across the web that Rainbow Rowell will be writing a book about Simon-Baz love story. It will be her very first fantasy book which is more likely to be a spin-off of ‘Fangirl’.

All in all, ‘Fangirl’ is a refreshing read. It’s a story which will bring you those warm smiles and makes you silently  say “ooh” and “aaaww“. How Cath managed to balance out all that is happening around her by accepting fully who she truly is and by embracing her reality – and still not giving up on her fanfiction – for me is what the book is all about. ‘Fangirl” is a very courageous and inspiring  coming of age story. So for all of you YA novels fans out there, here’s a good read you won’t want to miss. 🙂

So I guess, I loved it more than I hate it, what you think?

Here’s a little something for you to ponder (taken from the book) –

Cath : Just… isn’t giving up allowed sometimes? Isn’t it okay to say, ‘This really hurts, so I’m going to stop trying’?
Dad: It sets a dangerous precedent.
Cath : For avoiding pain?
Dad : For avoiding life.

The Sunday Currently Vol. 4

of books and brushes

I’ve missed you guys. I haven’t posted anything since Thursday and I’m so bummed about that. So sorry. Anyways, I hope you all had a good week!

Reading

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. It actually gets pretty interesting when you get to Chapter Sixteen when Cath saw Levi kissing another girl just when they french kissed (was it french kissing?) and slept together. Ugh..boys. (spoiler alert sorry haha!)

Writing

Trying to outline my posts for the week but the page is still blank. It goes like – here’s an idea..no no not good enough— *backspace backspace*

Listening

Love again by Ta-Ku via Spotify.

Watching

Penny Dreadful. Girl crushing on Vanessa Ives.

Thinking

of my budget and how to survive until the next payday.

Smelling

V-Cut.

Wishing

I could move my butt to do the laundry and clean the bathroom right now. Nah..the boyfriend could do that.

Hoping

We’d all have a great workweek.

Wearing

T- shirt and short shorts.

Loving

My black nail polish. Too bad I can only wear it this weekend as dark colored nail polish is not acceptable at work. The rebel in me is so mad. I’m also loving all the photos the boyfriend took of me earlier today for my #InMyCloset post. Watch out for this please. it will be posted on my blog soon. 🙂

Wanting

Seriously contemplating investing in a pretty theme. On my lists are Infashion by Themewarriors, Hemlock and Redwood both by Solopine. All costs much but it’s so beautiful that If i had a credit card I would’ve bought one right away. Luckily I don’t have a card so I still get to think about it haha!

Needing

Food. I’m hungry.

Feeling

Happy! I claim that August is a good month for all of us and it’s 5 weeks till our Boracay trip. Yehey!

It’s been a while since I updated my Everyday Favorites as life caught up with me and has been kind of wicked this past few days but I’m hanging on. As people would say, If life kicks you in the ass, get your head out of your ass! We do sometimes need to just take it slow and think things through. Enough of me and let’s move to this.

Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. I bought this book last December 2014 and started on a few chapters but did not really liked it so I put it down and somehow forgot about it. I stumbled upon it when i finished the Happiness Project and decided to give it one more try. So far it’s ok.

This day – so much as I got to spend it with my family and we’re all complete in one place and everyone is healthy. It’s my eldest sister’s birthday today and to celebrate my dad cooked spaghetti, fried chicken and minatamis na saging. I bought her favorite cake also. I miss them.

W A N T I N G
To eat all of the Nutella we bought last Friday. I know that we’re not suppose to put it in the fridge but since i really did not like it as a spread, I’m just dipping my finger in the jar every after 10 minutes and eating it on its own. Man! it’s so darn yummy especially when it’s cold! If only I’m not afraid to have diabetes I could finish it in one sitting!.
