Bookwhore Presents :: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

gretchen rubins happiness project

If you are following my blog (thank you very much <3) you would remember that I promised to write a review about The Happiness Project : Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean my Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun. Whew..that’s too long!

Ratings at : 3.5* and below is the back blurb:

Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. “The days are long, but the years are short,” she realized. “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.” In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project.

In this lively and compelling account, Rubin chronicles her adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. Among other things, she found that novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness; that money can help buy happiness, when spent wisely; that outer order contributes to inner calm; and that the very smallest of changes can make the biggest difference.

My take on the book:

I first encountered this book early last year but never picked it out as I was engrossed then on young adult (as if haha!) fiction novels ever since I read “The Fault in our Stars”. Then one Saturday morning, I woke up with the need to dig deep and find the meaning of happiness aka I was feeling so down due to work stress. I went to the nearest bookstore and this book finally ended up in my hands thus making my wallet Php 295.00 lighter.

Whenever Gretchen Rubin decided she wanted to be happy, organize her things and even control her surge of emotions you can’t help but be inspired and do the same. There are a number of good topics Gretchen pointed out in her memoir. One is in the January chapter when she provided ways to improve vitality by tackling a nagging task. Another topic is found on the February chapter about marriage when she emphasized the importance of not expecting praise or appreciation. It is quite dragging at times as I went along as I really can’t relate yet to some of her dilemmas but all in all it’s a good book as it does speak the truth about life.

This book inspired me to go back to blogging and pursue something that I really can call  “my own achievement”. You can also go back and read some of its chapters when you need a little dose of positivity.

Here’s a little something for you to ponder (taken from the book) –
“The days are long,  but the years are short.”

I had this sitting in my iBooks for over two years now and never really got to reading it. Maybe because I was under the I,press ion that it was like a self-help book? I didn’t even know until now it’s actually a novel. Or nah? Hah guess I’ll get to it one of these days.

Yes, it is sort of like a self-help book haha! 🙂 I recommend you read it when you need a dose of positivity cause you can actually take-away a lot of good advice/mantra from this book. Do let me know once you read it and share with me your thoughts. 🙂 BTW, we have the same first name except mine’s with a “K” haha! Nice to meet you Erica 🙂

Omg your name is Erika! Yay! Haha nice to meet you! I’ll definitely let you know once I read the book. Lately I’ve been obsessing over mystery thrillers. Gone Girl and the likes. I’m taking a break though so I’m going for an easy read this time, I could use a break from all the darkness haha.
