Bookwhore Presents : Miriam Defensor Santiago – Stupid Is Forever

Stupid is Forever

Ratings at 3.92* and below is the back blurb:

Sense of humor is almost absent among politicians, but Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is a truly talented exception. People are puzzled how she can spontaneously make them laugh in the midst of national policy crises, and of real danger to her life as a corruption fighter.

This book is a collection of jokes, one-liners, pick-up lines, conebacks and speeches delivered and/or curated by the beloved Senator. Also, inside are illustrations by Cj de Silva-Ong, Manix Abrera, Elbert Or, Rob Cham and more of the Philippines’ best young illustrators.

My take on the book:

“Stupid is Forever” is a tiny book and about a 1-2 hour read which is guaranteed to make your stomach hurt sooo bad from laughing (out loud) at most of the punchlines (although not all were original) and at the same time keeps your intellectual capacity tested. It’s a funny, witty, bad-ass and highly enjoyable find –  a refreshing read from my common genre of books. I recommend that people read this before the coming 2016 Presidential Elections, it’s an eye-opener, trust me.

With the help of some contemporary artists, the illustrations added entertaiment to the book. That is on top of  all the motivating and inspiring life-lesson speeches by the beloved Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago aimed for the youth. This book successfully mixed humor with the ugly reality of the Philippine politics – in the end it will ask you to take a stand and take action by doing and choosing what is right.

Here’s a little something for you to ponder (taken from the book) –

While there is no blueprint for the meaning of Life, there is countless research on ways to have a more meaningful life. There are three ways to make your life more meaningful:

First, get connected. While a busy social life with lots of friends may help keep you happy, it is the deeper relationships with loved ones that will truly add meaning to your life.

Second, do not shy away from stress. The things that add the most meaning to our lives – a high- pressure job or caring for a loved one – are often the same things that add the most stress to our day-to-day existence. However, taking the easy road is not always the better option. The biggest challenges in life often lead to the biggest gains in the long run.

Third, find a sense of purpose. Studies show that people who spend more time pursuing activities that reflected their sense of self were the people who found their lives more meaningful. A life filled with meaning is linked to doing things that express and reflect the self.

I printed the above and posted it on my workdesk for inspiration beside Steve Job’s  famous quote (left for me by my good friend) saying “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life… (i’m pretty sure you know how it goes)” Both quotes keep me inspired during stressful days at work. So I guess I’m off to buy the sequel of this book then.

If you want to know more about the inspiration for this book –

**a Filipino politician, notable for having served in all three branches of the Philippine government – judicial, executive, and legislative and was named one of The 100 Most Powerful Women in the World in 1997 by The Australian magazine. In 1988, she was named laureate of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service, with a citation “for bold and moral leadership in cleaning up a corrupt-ridden government agency. She also became the first Filipina and the first Asian from a developing country to be elected a judge of the International Criminal Court**

She is the bold and fierce Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago. Visit her page here.

My Bes Wednesdays

DCIM100GOPROHi there! My Bes Wednesdays is here once again! Listed here are some of the fun stuff the boyfriend (and now my Fiance) and I did this past days/week. Of course, this includes all the mushiness, so please excuse all our lovey-dovey-thingy. True love exists you know. <3

  • We got ENGAGED!! Yes, it’s now all official and he popped the question right there – on that beach! He made it so real, perfect, beautiful and memorable that I can’t stop smiling until now. I appreciate so much all his efforts to make this surprise a wonderful one. We’re so happy! Our fifth vacation in Boracay is once again full of happy memories 🙂
  • When he cleans your wound before sleeping and kissing it gently just so the pain would go away.
  • He urges you not to do work stuff because you’re on vacation and gets angry when you insists.
  • When he takes too many photos of me cause he knows I need it for my blog. So sweet and thoughtful 🙂

Our vacay is pretty much over and we are now on to our wedding planning stuff. We have actually chosen a venue already and we are now aiming to complete some other wedding suppliers such as photographer, band etc. So this means we need to save a LOT of money hence might be that we won’t be able to go on vacation for almost a year. It’s quite sad thinking about it but hey, after the wedding we still have a lifetime to plan more travels and go to different places together. We do have the rest of our lives for it anyway 🙂

Sending you cat hugs from across the web. Till’ next time! 🙂

Life in General

Want to get to know me just a little bit better? Here goes another round of my answers to ‘How to really know someone questions tag’.

15. What is the most drastic thing you’ve done?

Climb Mt. Maculot and survived the Secret Beach of El nido. “Buwis-buhay” adventures

16. What are your favorite movies?

Romeo and Juliet (Leonardo and Claire modern version), Moulin Rouge,  The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Hobbit (series), LOTR (series), About Time, Begin Again, Johnny Depp Films, Ghibli Movies, The garden of words, 50 cm per second, The girl who leapt thru time, and other Makoto Shinkai movies.

17. What is your favorite body part?

My Bes’s calves, his eyes and cheeks 🙂 If it’s my body part, I would say – my boobs haha.

18. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do?

Maybe because we have to make a living (most of the time we’re stuck in it) and with it we miss doing things we want to do.

19. How important is music in your life?

Like oxygen. It gets me thru my morning routine, helps me rub off my office blues and  my companion every night when coming home. It lifts up my mood.

20. How would you describe your father in four words?

Stubborn yet kind man.

21. If you were to change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

My feet.  I find them too ugly.

There it goes! Please do look forward to my next batch. For the list of all the questions, visit this tumblr site. Thank you also to this blog series from Corinth.

Feel free to answer the questions above and do leave a comment about it, I would love to hear from you!

The Sunday Currently Vol. 5

Q8S2SX1442140498It’s been a while and I’ve missed you! A lot has happened to me these past weeks – majority were very very very very good happenings while others were just a little bit disheartening. Yep, ‘disheartening’ is the exact word for it. Anyways I’m so over those shit just because we had the AWESOMEst vacation (I don’t want to say EVERRR!! – cause every vacation with my Bes are the best but..) EEVVEERRRRR!!

WE ARE NOW OFFICIALLY ENGAGED!! We’re sooo happy – like in cloud 9 – happy!!! 🙂 A million THANKS goes out to all those who greeted and wished us well ~ We luv you guys!! 🙂

boracay engagement

I have missed writing some of my Everyday Favorites so here goes another volume of my Sunday Currently.

Looking For Alaska by John Green. Started  reading this on the plane back to Manila early this morning and boy, I can not stop reading it! Pudge reminds me of my Bes – I don’t know why.  Bookwhore review soon, watch out for it! 🙂

This post. Later I’ll be queueing two book reviews I’ve read the past weekends and then some more. 🙂

Beneath your Beautiful by Labrinth feat. Emeli Sandé.

None as of the moment although we plan on watching Fear of the Walking Dead later this evening. Hoping it turns out good as its sequel – The Walking Dead.

What would be a good music for our wedding and what we will eat tomorrowcause I’m still on VL yehey!!

The rain. I miss the sunshine and the ocean – it hurts.

I can go back in time to be able to lie in the sand all day. No responsibilities, no care in the world. (insert #vacayHANGOVER)

I won’t have such a busy week so I can go home next weekend to see my family.

Skull print tank top and violet shorts. I miss beachwear so bad..and the sun and the sea..the ocean breeze..the sand oohh the sand..

Our travel photos — got a whole bunch! And of course, “the Engagement Ring”. It’s so beautiful just like our shooting star 🙂

To get a full rest tomorrow before going back to hectic workweek starting Tuesday. I’ve been on VL since Wednesday last week so yeah, work emails ~ Ugh!

A flourescent light. My skin color needs to go back to how it was but then again I love my tan or sunburnt or whatever haha.

Nothing at the moment just some random FB posts/IG feed. fifi_lapin and nikkireads feeds are my current favorites. Do check them out 🙂

Life in General

“The bluest sky is infinitely high and crystal clear…

Boracay Day 1

…that is what the world should be–a world of infinite possibilities, laid before us, crystal clear.”

Gentatsu, Rurouni Kenshin (Movie)

Ain’t it grand? The mystery of how the sky and the sea kisses, forming an inifinite horizon. Like lovers forever holding each other and never letting go? It makes you wonder how life can be so cruel but at the same time so awe inspiring and wonderful.

You can always ask too many questions and never get all the answers. You can always say goodbye and yet couldn’t let go.  Still after all of it..after all the hardships, at the end of the day, you are reminded that there’s a big world out there. Happiness is just lurking around the corner  waiting for you to open your eyes and see it for the first time.

Hence, life can be a crazy, whirlwind, roller coaster ride, but it’s so damn grand, ain’t it?

— All me being sentimental by the sea.
